From Music to Databases – A Unique Career Journey
Corey’s career journey didn’t begin in tech. He started as a middle school choir teacher before transitioning into IT. After working as a corporate trainer in database management, he moved into development and database administration. He spent a decade as an in-house DBA at a regional law firm in Lexington, Kentucky. In 2016, he shifted to the e-commerce industry, where he became actively involved in SQL Saturday events and regional database user groups. It was at one of these events in Cincinnati that he met Main Street’s CEO, leading to his career transition to Main Street in 2021.
Corey Hambrick: Driving Client Success & Team Growth
As a fractional DBA, Corey manages and supports nearly a dozen clients. He takes a unique approach by treating backup DBAs as co-DBAs, ensuring seamless collaboration and knowledge-sharing. Corey’s role extends beyond client support. He actively mentors DBAs within Main Street and across client organizations, fostering a culture of continuous learning and teamwork. Some of Corey’s standout projects include:
Optimizing SQL server performance for a leading organization, resulting in greater stability and streamlined backups.
Implementing data compression for a national law firm, reducing CPU usage and significantly improving database performance.
Index optimization for multiple clients, improving query efficiency and system responsiveness.
Commitment to Learning & Innovation
Corey’s expertise spans SQL Server, PowerShell, and Azure, and he is continually expanding his skill set—most recently exploring PostgreSQL and AI advancements. He also tries to stay very engaged with the SQL community.
He stays current with industry trends by following thought leaders like Brett Ozar, Pinal Dave, and Tracy Boggiano. Special shout out to Tracy Boggiano, who has helped mentor Corey and helped him become a presenter at SQL Saturday events and regular user group meetings
Corey’s Life Outside of Work
Outside of work, Corey is deeply involved in his church community and is considering pursuing a master’s degree from a seminary. He has been married for 28 years and enjoys spending time with his wife and three children. He recently started following F1 and IndyCar racing and goes yearly to the Indy 500 with his son. Corey also loves the mountains and to see their beauty.
Looking Ahead: Leadership & Mentorship
